Hay & hay Feeders

Horses are natural grazers. The equine digestive system is very long, the stomach very small, and the digestive process relatively slow. Their stomachs are designed to process small amounts of forage constantly throughout the day. However, in these days of urbanization, loss of pasture land to development and drought and other factors, most horse owners have to supplement the amount of grass their horse eats with hay. To ensure proper functioning of the equine digestive system, horses need to eat a minimum of one percent of their body weight in long-stem forage (either grass or hay) every day.

To avoid constipation, which can be very painful, and other gastric problems, horses need large amounts of fiber. This is the reason why, although concentrated grain mixtures might provide adequate nutrition, they typically will not provide enough bulk. Slowly and constantly eating a high fiber feed helps keep the gut healthy and the digestive system functioning which is why many feed round bales free choice.

As winter approaches and it gets colder, hay can alsohelp keep your horse warm. Digesting all that fibrous material generates a lot of heat. And having hay always available can also prevent stable vices such as cribbing and weaving, by providing an outlet for the horses natural foraging habits.

We typically carry coastal square bales, coastal round bales and alfalfa square bales. This only changes in extremely rare occasions like during the drought of 2011-2012 where it was cheaper to ship other hay like timothy from places like Pennsylvania.

Below is a coastal hay field from our supplier

Many people feel that staying with one hay supplier is important to keep the protein levels constant. However the difficulty with this is most hay growers have multiple cuts through the growing season. If they fertilize after every cut, the protein levels will vary slightly. Also bales can come from different fields meaning different hay.

To give you a "piece of mind", we use one primary supplier for all of our COASTAL SQUARE BALES who cuts his fields every 21-28 days depending on weather, giving him numerous cuts through out the growing season. With irrigation, we have quality hay year round for your horses. He also fertilizes after every cut to guarantee you quality hay bale after bale.

For COASTAL ROUND BALES we have two primary suppliers due to the large number of bales we require. These suppliers also fertilize after every cut to provide top quality hay even after the growing season has ended. Hay buggies are available free of charge when round bales are purchased from us.

Our ALFALFA SQUARE BALE suppliers are located in New Mexico. Although we can find alfalfa hay for cheaper prices occasionally, we don't want to take any chances by purchsing alfalfa hay from Texas, Oklahoma, Arizona or other non-safe states in regards to blister beetles. We feel your horses well being is more important than a couple of dollars but we do try to keep our prices as low as possible.

FYI: Did you know that typically New Mexico alfalfa is wire tied, Arizona alfalfa is baled with yellow twine and Oklahoma alfalfa is baled with orange twine. This is not a guarantee but rather a guideline for your horses well being.
